Three regions in Maharashtra to have GI tourism circuit tags: Suresh Prabhu
Mumbai: Three regions in Maharashtra will be developed as geographical indicators (GI) tourism circuits to promote the native agriculture produce, Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu said in New Delhi on Saturday.
Mr. Prabhu, who also holds the civil aviation portfolio, directed officials to prepare a policy to set up stalls of GI products at all the airports in the country. He was reviewing the development of agriculture, services, and manufacturing sector in the Konkan region.
A GI-tourism circuit consisting of Mahabaleshwar-Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Nashik, will be developed, while Sindhudurg-Ratnagiri Airport will me made operational on a priority basis, the minister said.
Mr. Prabhu said the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority and the Spice Board and Rubber Board must play an important role in the faster development of the Konkan region. “Representatives from SHGs and farmers’ groups will also be consulted for the plan.”
The minister said a feasibility study for establishing a campus of the Indian Institute for Packaging in Sindhudurg-Ratnagiri will be carried out.
